IslandWire: November 21, 2024

Dear Reader,

In the wake of this election, we are facing new and profound challenges to our work and our lives. This moment is unsettling for many and may stir feelings of fear, frustration, or fatigue. We want to acknowledge these emotions and the different ways in which every one of us will experience this shift.

I want to assure you that even in the face of uncertainty, our commitment to a more just and sustainable world remains unwavering. Working to solve the interconnected environmental threats facing our planet and humanity is both our guide and our call to action. Our diverse network of activists and environmental projects will persevere and thrive, despite the challenges we face. We will continue to amplify the voices of those on the frontlines of environmental and social justice work. With an eye toward a more just and vibrant future, we will continue to cultivate the next generation of leaders and hold those in power accountable for their impact on our planet.

It is this deep commitment to transformative change that positions us to proceed with steadfast clarity and courage. Your support is essential as we continue this work—equipping us to act boldly, stay resilient, and build a world that sustains us all.

With gratitude and determination,

Spare Some Cash to Defend the Environment

Did you know less than 4% of charitable giving went to environmental initiatives in the United States in 2023? At the same time we are spending nearly five times as much on disaster relief, and 30 times more on oil subsidies. It’s time to invest in solutions instead of enabling Big Oil. Join us in protecting the environment.

Your donation will be doubled thanks to a year-end matching gift fund, up to $30,000! Your contribution helps us address some of the most pressing issues, like climate change, environmental justice, community resilience, and more. Donate and double your impact.

What We’re Listening To

The newly released Serial Podcast, "The Good Whale" features Dave Phillips, director of International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP), speaking on their campaign to rescue Keiko, the star of the movie Free Willy. This wildly successful initiative resulted in the first and only release of a captive whale from an amusement park to his home waters. Serial is among the most-listened-to podcasts in the world. Keiko’s legacy lives on through IMMP’s work to free captive whales from concrete tanks. Check out IMMP’s urgent campaign to rescue the last two captive orcas in France, Wikie and Keijo.
