South Coast Habitat Restoration

Trout Triumph

Earth Island Reports

One of the key goals of South Coast Habitat Restoration (SCHR) is to restore the federally endangered southern steelhead trout population through stream restoration and passage-enhancement projects. This summer SCHR coordinated a project on Lion Creek in Ojai, California. Lion Creek is a tributary to San Antonio Creek, which contains important habitat for steelhead trout within the Ventura River Watershed. The project took place on private property and involved the removal of a low-flow crossing that impaired steelhead passage. The crossing was replaced with an 85-foot clear spanning bridge made out of a recycled railroad car. A collaborative effort between the property owner, SCHR, and local, state, and federal agencies, the project has improved steelhead access to approximately 9.5 miles of upstream habitat and has restored the stream channel.
