In the Light of Reverence, the documentary produced and directed by Christopher McLeod of Sacred Land Film Project, was recently awarded the Henry Hampton Award for Excellence in Film and Digital Media at the Council on Foundations’ annual meeting in San Diego in April. The prestigious award is given to exceptional, influential films that exemplify successful, effective uses of philanthropy. The award specifically recognized the film distribution strategy – emphasizing both education and activism – which is a model that has been followed by many other filmmakers.
In May, the Forum in Defense of the Coastal Zone of Ceara (FDZCC), the Environmental Education Network of the Ceara Coast (REALCE), and Instituto Terramar initiated an Environmental Caravan “Mangroves are our Heritage,” which visited communities along the Brazilian coastline.
The Caravan is supported by Mangrove Action Project, which is promoting an art contest with the theme “Why mangroves are important for me and for my community,” open to children aged 6–13 who attend schools in coastal communities.
Earth Island Institute welcomes three new projects! Nature in the City has a mission to restore a positive human connection with urban nature, leading to urban ecological sustainability. Energy Action is the project of Billy Parish, winner of a 2004 Brower Youth Award. Energy Action, focuses on reducing campus emissions by encouraging action on global warming. EcoEquity is founded by Paul Baer and Tom Athanasiou, co-authors of Dead Heat: Global Justice and Global Warming. This project advocates the principle of equal rights and access to global common resources.

The 2005 awards ceremony will exemplify the broadening collaboration between environmental, environmental justice and social justice activists, and organizations and further ignite the progressive movement’s relevance and importance in popular culture. Live and direct, the 2005 Brower Youth Awards ceremony will be a fusion of performances by internationally renowned musicians and poets and highlight the most creative work accomplished by burgeoning leaders this year. In July, Brian Williams, executive director and founder of the Red Panda Project, and Praveen Singh, the project’s communications director, will head to Nepal and India to lobby the government and garner local and regional support for the proposed Singhalila Red Panda Reserve, the world’s first reserve for the endangered red panda. The reserve would be located in an area that boasts 20 percent of Nepal’s red panda population. Williams and Singh will meet with officials at the national, regional, and local level to secure endorsement for this sanctuary.
