Earth Island Project Reports

The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) recently announced that Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) is a finalist for the 2008 Outdoor Industry Ambassador Award. Each year, the OIA Award recognizes a company that has made significant and ongoing achievements toward the growth of participation in outdoor activities.

BAWT’s mission is simple: to provide Bay Area youth service organizations with professional wilderness-leadership training and quality outdoor equipment, so these adult leaders may safely lead youth in exploring the power and beauty of California’s wilderness. Since 1999, BAWT has served over 5,000 youth.

Bay Localize recently released the report “Tapping the Potential of Urban Rooftops,” which assesses the feasibility of rooftop development in the San Francisco Bay Area through an in-depth case study of a neighborhood in downtown Oakland.

The report’s most compelling findings shows that the study area — which contained 743 buildings and totaled 0.25 square miles — could generate 1.9 million gallons of irrigation water from rainwater harvesting, produce 11.6 million kWh of solar electricity, and harvest 124 metric tons of vegetables per year!

Earth Island Institute welcomes three new projects! South Coast Habitat Restoration will manage habitat protection, conservation, restoration, and outreach projects in the Santa Barbara and Ventura region. Its goals are to foster community support and obtain public and private funding to improve habitat for wildlife.

China Rivers Project will protect China’s river heritage for people and wildlife and foster river-based recreation in China. The group envisions a future where healthy rivers form the core of healthy, sustainable communities, and where the beauty and diversity of China’s rivers can continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.
