BAWT launches new program
The Youth Wilderness Leadership Training will provide under-served and at-risk youth with opportunities to develop skills that will strengthen their relationships with peers and adults in their lives; acquire competencies in wilderness leadership and safety; and develop leadership skills that will serve their communities. Modeled on the adult training sessions (pictured at right), the youth program will work with those who have already demonstrated an aptitude for positive leadership in a social or school setting, and are affiliated with an organization or adult who has participated in the Wilderness Leadership Training. By participating in this program, youth will learn to co-lead outdoor adventures. Through training and outdoor trips they’ll gain self-esteem, improve their decision-making skills, and serve as role models for their peers. This program will be offered for the first time in 2003, and will serve approximately 12 youths. To plan and administer the YWLT, BAWT will work with Bay Area School of Enterprise (BASE).
