10th Anniversary Year: Changing Gears at the Market

photo of a bike valet at a market

We’re excited to announce that our very own Changing Gears full-service nonprofit bike shop is celebrating their 10th Anniversary this year!

And to celebrate, they’ve launched Changing Gears at the Market – a new community program where, through September they’ll be offering FREE services at three Bay-area Farmer's Markets: Alameda, Temescal and Grand Lake. See their schedule here.

Located in Alameda just south of Oakland, Changing Gears’ mission is to operate a bicycle based social enterprise which benefits the under-served people of the local area. They provide job training to low- income and formerly homeless young adults, professional repairs, new & used bikes/parts and are a place for all ages and backgrounds to volunteer or fix their own bikes with their DIY repair stands. The shop’s vision is to be a space where community engagement, political participation, economic opportunity and sustainable transportation come together for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Since they've opened, the shop has received over 3,000 bicycle donations (thereby diverting over 10 tons of material from local landfills), provided hundreds of youth and adults with bicycles and repairs through their work-credit program, and is a regular site for Eagle Scout projects, corporate volunteering events and school bicycle field trip programs.

Meet their youth team at the market this summer and get ready for their annual Bike Swap on June 5th!
