SEA Lab, Redondo Beach
Construction and Operation of Sea Learning Laboratory
Grantee: SEA LAB
Award: $4000000
Total Cost:

THE SEA LAB in Redondo beach was created by Earth Island Institute and Southern California Edison. The SEA LAB, a marine science education facility, hosts children from all over the Los Angeles area to teach them about marine science ecology and protection values. In addition to aquariums and tanks that hold halibut, abalone, seahorses and eels (to name a few), SEA LAB also has interactive learning games, research facilities, a native plant nursery and space for events. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps fully runs and manages the programs and facility at SEA LAB. In addition to its in-center programs, the SEA Lab extends its offerings into the community through summer camp programs, community service projects and the Traveling Tidepool mobile exhibit. All of the activities are operated by college students trained by the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, who receive help from more than 100 dedicated local volunteers.
