Plastic Pollution Coalition and Advocates Win Big Against Microbeads

The international movement to ban plastic microbeads from personal care products achieved big wins this month in the US, and our project Plastic Pollution Coalition and it's members were right in the thick of it to ensure protection of our waterways and fish species.

Three weeks ago, AB 888 was signed into law by Governor Brown in California that will prohibit the sale of products with plastic microbeads as of Jan. 1, 2020. With nearly 18 states proposing similar legislation, the House just approved legislation that would ban them nationally by 2017. Hooray!

Founded in 2009, PPC and their 400+ members work together to amplify the message that we need to end our dependence on single-use plastics. PPC helps put pressure on manufacturers to improve the design of their products; on policymakers to ban bags, beads, chemicals and certain containers; and consumers to look for alternatives to plastic. Take their ‘No Plastic Straw’ pledge here.
