Sustainability and Community Resilience

Projects

glyphFaced with threats from man-made and natural disasters, more and more communities are seeking local solutions to protect their food, water, air, housing and economy. Earth Island Institute supports collaborative solutions to environmental and justice issues. Our projects have helped increase access to healthy food, clean water, local clean energy, and environmental education. While the focus and outcomes of these projects vary, a common approach is to leverage partnerships to build sustainable and resilient communities.

Recent studies have shown that Native Americans are more likely than any other people group to be victim to institutional-based violence and discrimination. In 2014, Women’s Earth Alliance and Native Youth Sexual Health Network launched a multi-year initiative to document the ways that North American Indigenous women’s safety and health are impacted by extractive industries. In 2016 WEA and Native Youth Sexual Health Network held a Week of Action to End Environmental Violence and launched a report and toolkit entitled “Violence on the Land, Violence on our Bodies: Building an Indigenous Response to Environmental Violence.”
