Exploring Watershed Habitats
Fifth-graders from Glassbrook Elementary School in Hayward, CA recently participated in a unique environmental action project that gave them special access to beautiful private Bay Area oak woodland and grassland habitat. Biologists guided student scientists in planting valley oak acorns to improve the health of the watershed and taught the children how to use binoculars to investigate a Red-tailed Hawk nest. The field trip was the result of two years of dedicated planning and a partnership between EII's KIDS for the BAY, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Avila and Associates, and AECOM. Kids for the Bay's Watershed Action Program provides unique opportunities like this one for youth to explore and improve special watershed habitats. Public Outcry Building against Killing Contests
Public outcry against wildlife killing contests is building across the country. The film continues to be picked up by film festivals and local events. Two events are scheduled in Massachusetts for the end of this month — including one at Salem State University featuring the EII project's director, Camilla Fox, as the keynote speaker.
