The design created for the utility box is inspired by posters that called for people to plant “victory gardens” during World War II. Encouraged by the federal government to supplement scarce fruit and vegetable supplies, people planted more than 20 million victory gardens, producing an estimated 40% of all vegetables eaten nationally during the later war years.

My hope was that this piece would call attention to the exciting development of urban agriculture as a viable form of sustainable food practice in the city, as well as encourage more folks to join in!
