In the past 30 years, the population of the now endangered Steller sea lion has dropped some 80-90% in the center of its range in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska. The cause of this decline is stated by the National Marine Fisheries Service to be lack of available prey. The precipitous decline in Stellers correlates directly with the rise of the now gigantic groundfish trawl fishery in these waters. The trawlers: 1) target the Steller's primary prey species: pollock, Pacific cod, and Atka mackerel; 2) overfish (catch has increased as biomass of the targeted stocks has dropped appreciably since the 1980's); and 3) concentrate fishing within designated critical habitat for the endangered Steller sea lion, more than 60% in the case of the pollock catch. However, action on the part of the National Marine Fisheries Service, torn between enforcing the US Endangered Species Act and answering to the industry behind the largest fishery in the country, has been slow, minimal, and reluctant. I am writing to urge you to use your influence to turn this situation around by assuring the magnificent Steller sea lion the level of protection it needs to have the best chance of recovery.
