Keiko Begins Rehabilitation

As we go to press, final preparations are underway for the historic transfer of the orca whale Keiko from the Reino Aventura marine park in Mexico City to a new rescue and rehabilitation center at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon.

The move takes place on January 7th, when the 21-foot-long, 7,000-pound star of Free Willy will make the nine-hour flight in a C-130 Hercules transport plane donated by the United Parcel Service.

The new facility at the Oregon Coast Aquarium will be filled with cold, ozone-treated seawater from the neighboring Yaquina Bay, and aggressive efforts will be made to cure Keiko's skin condition and other ailments. Meanwhile, Keiko's rehabilitation will continue to aim at making him the first captive orca whale ever returned to the wild, in the waters off Iceland.

The major fundraising campaign for the operation of the new center is underway.
