16-day tour This is a ski tour for experienced backcountry skiers who can carry a rucksack with their camping gear and part of their food. The trip takes one over the Central Kamchatka Mountain Range and down into the Timonovskiy Hot Springs Snow Sheep Reserve and out the Avacha River Valley. For an additional fee, 2 snow machines with sleds can escort the group from the trailhead up to the base of the Maisky Mountain Pass. Take 3-4 days total crossing the pass, ski around the Medvijy Lake and Avachinskoye Lake without snow machine support, carrying your own backpack. Cross the Timonovsky Pass. Ski down into the Timonovskiy Hot Spring's area and meet 2 snow machines with supplies that will escort the group during the rest of the trip, helping carry baggage, food, and camp equipment. Travel with a guide/interpreter and camp out in some of Kamchatka's most beautiful mountainous country. Share camp cooking duties unless otherwise requested. For additional amount, a cook can accompany the group. Day 1 Arrival in Kamchatka, overnight either in homestays or at Paratunka hot springs area in a clean, modest hotel with dining room, hot springs-fed swimming pool. Equipment check, group meeting to explain the route, answer questions and look at maps. Swim at Hot Springs pools as desired. Day 2 Early morning departure. Drive 208 km to the Central Kamchatka Valley-start skiing. The first day, ski about 15 km up to the ridge below Bakenin Volcano. Bakenin Volcano is a beautiful extinct volcano that is your entrance into the mountains. Camp. Day 3 Cross Maiskiy Pass 1261 meters and descend to Medvejiy Lake 6 km. Camp. Day 4 Ski 6-8 km along Avachinskoye Lake to below Timonovsky Pass. Camp. Day 5 Cross Timonovskiy Pass(1500 meters) 14 km to the hot springs. This area was set aside to protect the population of brown mountain sheep. This Reserve features high mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams. The Reserve is named for a famous natural hot springs near where the group will camp. The hot springs, nestled into the side of a mountainside, if famous on Kamchatka for it's healing properties. Nearby is also a mineral water spring and locals revere the drinkable water for it's many healthful benefits. Here snow machine support with fresh food supplies and a kitchen/eating tent will meet you. Day 6-7 Reserve days for bad weather. If good weather, there are plenty of wonderful areas to explore. Day 8 Rest at the hot springs, ski as desired. Day 9 Rest at the hot springs, ski as desired. Day 10-11 Ski down the Sredniy Avacha River Valley, about 15 km per day, to meet a vehicle for your trip back to civilization. Camp out along the way. Return to your accommodations in town. Day 12 Rest in Paratunka. Day 13 City tour of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, visiting shops and the open market as well as museums and art galleries as desired. Overnight in your accommodations in Yelizovo. Day 14 Day ski at Avacha Volcano Early in the morning, drive to the trailhead at Avacha Volcano, overlooking Yelizovo and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Ski all day on the volcanic slopes, enjoy a picnic lunch and return in the late afternoon. Evening banquet at a local restaurant. Day 15 Departure day.
