1999-2000 Earth Island Annual Report

Section I: Organizational Report

Table of Contents:

Welcome to our first Web-based Annual Report! By offering the Annual Report on the World Wide Web, we hope to: reduce the amount of paper used, provide immediate access for those who are interested in getting the full picture of our work, and offer more information than the print medium would typically allow. Also, the Report offers links to other parts of our Web site for additional details. The growth of the World Wide Web continues to amaze us, as our Web site was registering more than 10,000 visitors each week in early 2000. If, for whatever reason, someone would like a printed copy of the report, we're happy to mail one out.

Our Founder and Chair David Brower, continues to be on the cutting edge of many environmental issues, including the restoration of Glen Canyon, and working with the Alliance for Sustainable Jobs. The Brower Legacy Leaders Program benefited several projects through paid internships.

In 1999, we welcomed three new projects to our family: Aral Sea Project, Bay Area Wilderness Training, and Earthinfo.org. The Earth Island Journal continued to be a voice for the environment, winning a number of awards in 1999, including two from Project Censored for "Ten Best Censored Stories of 1999."

The work of some 30 Earth Island projects speaks for itself, and we encourage you to delve into the summary information in the Annual Report, as well as the detail that most projects maintain on our Web site.

Community collaboration continues to be an essential tool as we develop and expand partnerships. Earth Island is represented on the California Environmental Dialogue in a unique effort for representation of government, business, and environmental groups seeking common ground as a basis for future initiatives. Earth Island continues to provide nominations for the Goldman Environmental Prize, and two of the six prizewinners in April 2000 had earlier been nominated by Earth Island.

In 2000, we are excited about our new Restoration Initiatives program. This board-initiated project will include the creation of a "Restoration Vision for California" as well as the creation of the Brower Youth Awards. The Initiatives are an extension of Dave Brower's formula for Global CPR - conservation, preservation, and restoration of the Earth.

On behalf of the board, staff and volunteers of Earth Island Institute, we thank you for your support and welcome your active participation in the months ahead. We rely on active citizen participation to make our programs and projects come alive.

We encourage all of those interested in the latest developments to subscribe electronically to IslandWire, a monthly e-mail service that points out new content on Earth Island's ever-changing Web pages. To subscribe, please visit our Web site and click on "Get our free IslandWire Newsletter."

We continue to believe that we have a uniquely valuable role in sponsoring so many strong, bold, and effective projects, providing support services that make a difference in the evolution of the projects while giving project directors maximum latitude for creative action.

A WORD FROM DAVID R. BROWER, CHAIRMAN AND FOUNDER

When I started Earth Island Institute in 1982, I wanted its mission to be "instilling ecological conscience in all spheres of human activity," which I think remains at the core of what we do today. Earth Island's first big project was the first Conference on the Fate of the Earth, bringing together concerned citizens from around the world (including John Knox who would later become an Executive Director of the outfit) to create a future by design, not by default. We had three more Conferences on the Fate and Hope of the Earth, and more are needed, since the world needs ecological conscience more than ever.

Younger people like to turn my phrase into "ecological consciousness," forgetting that I was born in 1912, when "consciousness" was something you lost only if you hit your head too hard. Certainly we need to be conscious of the Earth and our impact on it, but awareness is useless if you don't do anything with it. Your conscience, related to your intuition, tells you viscerally what is right and wrong and what to do about it, with no cost-benefit analysis required. We need to begin to listen to that conscience, that intuition.

I agree with William "Holly" Whyte who advocates in his book, The Organization Man, for Retroactive Planning, where you act on what you viscerally know is right, then do the research to prove it. Or Jane Jacobs, who is close to my age and can thus be considered an elder, says that when ordinary people pay attention, they are often capable of more profound insights than the experts.

The opportunity for Earth Island is to see how we can get ordinary people, all of us, to pay attention to the immediate opportunity to restore the Earth and to what the global implications will be if our insight beats the experts, if that is what it takes. Let me make it clear that I have nothing against experts. I wouldn't be alive without them. But now and then their insight is impaired. That's why God created ordinary people.

Our work is two-fold: building conscience through education and citizen activism - or filling in as the ecological conscience for leaders who have misplaced theirs. Most of our major institutions have successfully drowned out their consciences with information overload and the frenzy to get the best "bargains" in the global liquidation sale that is taking apart our planet. None of our government and business leaders have asked what it costs the Earth and the future to advocate for this brand of endless economic growth.

In 1999, we got some new allies in our belief that the cost is too high. After a night at the bar in Eugene, Oregon, and several subsequent meetings, the United Steelworkers of America asked me to serve as co-chair of a new organization, the Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and the Environment. The other co-chair, Steelworkers Regional Director David Foster, summarized the opportunity beautifully when he addressed the environmental caucus in Houston: "If you will promise to make sustainable jobs a part of environmental protection, we will promise to make environmental protection our most important job." Inspired by these words, the Alliance converged on Seattle with numerous other groups and unions to throw a wrench into the World Trade Organization's further promotion of the global liquidation sale.

We seized another opportunity in 1999 by holding our first Restoration Fair for over 700 people in San Francisco who wanted to see the environmental movement do more than simply slow the rate at which things get worse. Over 45 projects presented examples of how we are restoring our ecosystems and communities and leaving our children a legacy we can be proud of. The Fair was only the beginning of Earth Island's commitment to Restoration. In 2000, we have launched our Restoration Initiatives to catalyze and publicize restoration efforts all over. Restoring the planet is the greatest opportunity of the new century and it's time more people knew and did something about it! Stay tuned.
